Whats Behind You

Sometimes we focus so much on what we can see in front of us from our tree stand; that we forget to think about what the deer sees from his angle.

Whether you are hunting with a gun, bow or muzzleloader, you will almost always have to make some kind of movement to get your sights on a deer. While a whitetail's sense of smell is his best defense, we just can't ignore his sight and hearing.

Camouflage alone will not do the trick. Deer will key in on movement, so your best defense is a good set of camo AND some background clutter to break up your outline.

If you're hunting from an elevated position, try to keep a canopy of leaves between you and the sky. When hunting from the ground, leafy bushes or thick branches will do the trick.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the closer to you the background is, the harder it will be for a deer to pick you out against it, especially when your camo matches your surroundings.

Most often you have picked a place where there will most likely be no deer behind; but on occasion we have to be in a place where deer can be everywhere.

So don't forget to look behind you? Do this in super slow motion and use your eyes first and then your body. You could be surprised at the result.
